Lately its been really tough to get excited about music, even after attending two festivals as good as Bearded Theory and Download Festival in a row, yes they provided some amazing moments and top class bands I already knew about, but apart from seeing a band like Split Dogs live twice at both festivals, new music feels lacking, and then come along TRIVIA, my mind is blown! Now we are talking excitement, the smile on my face when hearing the first and title track from this Sunderland duo’s debut EP ‘Home’ was accompanied by a feeling of pure joy, “this is fucking what its all about!” I scream, “when do I get chance to see them live” is my second response.
So seeing The Damned, Skunk Anansie, Garbage, The Pixies, Limp Bizkit, Guns N Roses, Linkin Park, Social Distortion and Feeder live in the last 2 months has just been topped by 2 under 16 year olds playing Punk/Rock like it was meant to be played, raw and full of energy and with no pretensions at all. The opener ‘Home’ has all the class that any seasoned punk band could muster, its a song that feels like its got nothing missing at all, every riff, hook, beat is just exactly where it needs to be, the vocal is sublime, it’s an anthem from the onset. Only one song down and I’m sold, but hang on there are more, ‘Tonight’ drops next and this slows the pace a little, but its non the less powerful, everything about this duo’s songs shouts bigger and better!, it wouldn’t be a stretch to liken lead singer Hannah’s vocal to Taylor Momsen (The Pretty Wreckless) because that’s exactly who I might have mistaken her for if I listened blind. This song, along with ‘Fade’, give your ears some serious food for thought on that subject, they both exude power and soul in equal measure, this along with Drummer Lydia’s adeptness of feel, make everything just soar.
So if you were in any doubt as to whether or not this is a duo that could, should, will hit heights they may not dream of yet, just wrap your ears around the tracks ‘Schizophrenia’ and ‘Where Do You Go’ both are very different, but both wouldn’t go wanting on any arena stage, this is music aged beyond its years, just listen to the timing changes in the latter, just exceptional. If there had to be any criticism of this debut EP, it has to be, why not an LP!, your left just wanting more more more, as Taylor Momsen would say, it’s “Death By Rock and Roll”, and that makes us all happy. If you want a new and exciting band to get your ears around, you just read about them, now go get this EP and weep.
