The Boy Detective have released their Summer single, The Beach Boys Were Full Of It, via Punkerton Records, the track takes the classic fantasy of the perfect beach day and drags it face first through the actual experience: too much sun, too much cheap beer, awkward public behavior, and the kind of uncomfortable strangers who make paradise feel a little threatening. Instead of writing a glossy summer anthem, The Boy Detective turn the beach into a chaotic, funny, and slightly hostile place. The song is built around the gap between what summer is supposed to feel like and what it often actually is: sunburned, overstimulated, weird, loud, and full of people making questionable decisions in public. Musically, the track matches that energy with fast horn driven ska punk, sharp hooks, gang vocal urgency, and the band’s usual mix of humor, frustration, and self aware storytelling. It is a beach song for people who know the beach is beautiful, but also kind of terrible.
“Ahh, the beach. A midwestern dream while feeling like a prisoner living through another cold biting winter. If only things could get warmer. Now that the weather has broken and the sun has come back out to play, the beach is a reality! As you dig your toes into the warm sand, you feel a ‘bite’ of a needle. Or, you witness the sad sight of misbehaving adults trying to drown themselves in booze and inebriated bad decisions while trying to relive their youth. You just wanted to relax, but now all you want to do is be as far away from this fake mirage as possible. A giant shark isn’t the only thing terrorizing your vacation, humanity is too.” (lead singer Benny Capaul)
