Toronto’s Little Window have announced that they will release their debut album, Red Ant, on the 27th October, the band approached recording their debut full length with the same persistence that shaped the writing process, pushing through creative obstacles from the first ideas to the final master. Written through cycles of insomnia, grief and self-destruction, Red Ant embraces the horror and chaos of death and transmutation. The memory inspired the album’s title, while the record itself became a form of catharsis following the destructive period of grief after frontman Eli Howey‘s brother died by suicide in 2021. The band also plans to transform the film set into a fully immersive art installation in the spring for an intense, genre-bending Red Ant performance and art exhibition, which will also mark the beginning of Little Window‘s North American and European tour in 2027.
“It’s far from a passive approach to finding the inspiration to transgress each creative roadblock. Our commitment to intensity and neurotic collective perseverance is a big part of what makes Red Ant unique. We fought for these songs, down to the tiniest detail, so that every chaotic piece of them could be distilled onto the record. Explorations of the fracture and intensity of death’s confrontation had given way to a sort of expansiveness. I had not had that kind of levity in a long time, and it triggered a childhood memory of climbing up a steep rock face with my siblings barefoot. We climbed to the highest ledge, feigning the courage to jump into the lake below from the extreme height. Crowded on the small ledge together, we all looked down with sudden shock. Dozens of red ants were stinging our bare feet, having disturbed their nest under the moss. Our eyes locked for a millisecond in midair. A euphoric moment of synchronized recklessness, all having made the same ridiculous decision to immediately jump. All it took was fully indulging the ‘stress addiction’ the trauma created, running head first into everything I’ve been the most afraid of and compulsively building a whole freakshow world to make space to be able to be in contact with death.“ (Eli Howey)
