When French trio This Will Destroy Your Ears first arrived in Blackpool, UK in 2023, they weren’t expecting a revelation; they were just playing a gig at the Bootleg Social, a venue tucked away in the seaside town’s fractured neon sprawl. Afterwards, guided through the city’s carnival chaos by the venue’s lighting technician, they found themselves confronted with something that would leave an indelible mark not just on their memories, but on their music. That spirit became the driving force behind their new album, Funland, that hums with energy, bristles with experimentation, and captures the joyful unease of a town whose glittering lights are never far from the shadows. The title itself says it all, carrying both promise and menace in a single word.
“Exactly that idea of being both joy and unease! It’s the sideways step that lets you write a very cheerful song about your own funeral, or playfully slip a nursery rhyme into a song about the fear of having lost all trace of childhood. It’s a kind of letting go of life, and it feels good. What struck us the most, and what we truly admire, is the mix of styles and this kind of aesthetic of too much. Too loud, too worn-out, too kitsch, sometimes even too sad. And often, that ‘too much’ becomes absolutely brilliant, because it goes beyond the limits of good taste, restraint, or logic. It turns into a real way of life. That’s the spirit we tried to keep in mind for this album, along with all the characters we met there who embody that idea.” (guitarist Pierre-Yo)
That tension between brightness and darkness, chaos and tenderness, runs through the album like a stick of the town’s infamous rock. The inspiration drawn from Blackpool by the band wasn’t just an abstract atmosphere, it was also human, embodied in the people and scenes they stumbled across. One night provided enough material for an entire song. Funland is a celebration of excess, contradiction, and the strange beauty that emerges when life tips over into “too much.” Like Blackpool itself, the album is dazzling and decayed, chaotic and cathartic, surreal yet deeply human. Funland is released today via À Tant Rêver Du Roi, Luik Music and Conicle Records and This Will Destroy Your Ears have announced additional UK & EU live dates as part of their Winter 2025 headline tour.

“On every street corner, something goes off the rails. A sailor stumbling way too early, a ‘Disney princess’ carriage that looks far too fake, a hen party as loud as a hooligan invasion… Within the space of 30 minutes, my sandwich got stolen by a seagull, I stumbled upon that infamous carriage pulled by a pony dressed up as a unicorn, and I witnessed a man in an angel costume throwing himself off the pier! Part of the song was already writing itself!” (Pierre-Yo)
