Fierce independent Scottish duo The Twistettes are set to release their third full length, Red Door Open, on the 2nd May, the sisters, Jo and Nicky D’arc, have not shifted from their combination of driven fuzzed out bass and pounding drums, but in comparison to their previous brace of albums this album seems to have been given an slight layer of polish. Maybe this shouldn’t be a surprise considering that David Brennan, who has worked with the likes of The Jesus and Mary Chain, Mogwai and Primal Scream, was at the helm during the recording of the album.

The album starts with Open, which strays into the surrealist territory occupied by Lancashire duo The Lovely Eggs, but then we hit Bounce Baby, the album’s freshly released third single, that lives up to it’s name, pounding drums and a bass riff with the fuzzbox set to maximum. The albums second single, All I Want, picks up the baton and somehow takes it in a completely different direction, the same trick is pulled as the frenzied Ice Cream throws you a brief but brutal curveball. For me the album’s finest moment is the catchy as hell lead single, Big Boned, that explodes with a beat transplanted from Glam Rock that is overlaid with a fuzzed out riff and accompanied by a chanted verse and a deliciously defiant chorus.
The second half of Red Door Open brings another dimension into play with the almost spaced out Pressure Point. Proving that nothing is predictable in The Twistettes world, the grungy Leaf Upon A Tree takes you back to the 90’s before the hypnotic Back To The End steadily builds to a frenzied climax. Everything is stripped away for the haunting and a capella Coal Dust before the album closes with the dark and heavy Lush. Every one of Red Door Open‘s ten tracks are distinct from what came before. For me this is The Twistettes finest outing to date, the band’s core elements have not shifted, but they have been twisted to their own design on a surprising and impressive album.

The Twistettes are living proof you don’t need to over complicate things, like duos such as Yur Mum, The Courettes and the aforementioned The Lovely Eggs, The Twistettes prove that with less you can do sometimes do so much more. The Twistettes will be playing live shows In support of Red Door Open including an album launch show at Glasgow’s Ivory Blacks on the 2nd May and appearances at Eaton Punk Festival and Rebellion Festival.
