Never hardcore enough for the punk scene, too destructive for the ska circle, and hailing from a small city no one has ever given a damn about, Offend Your Friends have always done things their way. Their new album, Almost Didn’t Make It, that is due out on the 27th March, is no exception. Is it more polished or poppier than their earlier efforts? Maybe, but the songs are arguably better. The vocals are acerbic, bouncing between the literal and allegorical. The guitars are big, the bass gets funky, and the sax ties a melodic thread throughout. Ahead of the album’s release the band have shared another taste of the album with the release of the video for Fake Work Fridays.
There may be less ska than before, but there’s still some ska, both upbeat and dark. A lot of life has been lived since George W. Bush invaded Iraq and the band was a bunch of disgruntled teenagers drinking cheap beers in a smoke-filled basement and cranking out gritty ska-core tunes. But time doesn’t always have to be the enemy. They Almost Didn’t Make It. But they made it. Tap the keg. Offend Your Friends are back with a musical vengeance.
