Moving Targets are a band who missed 25 years on the release scene, but with this latest album that will be 4 in 7 years. So what does their new album, Red Eyes, bring to our world?….. From the first few bars my initial thoughts, and I like to share these because it usually turns out to be nothing like any of the other thoughts throughout the album, were that this sounded like the start of the band’s namesake album by Penetration, this obviously did change somewhat abruptly. Red Eyes as a lead in and the album title being an instrumental speaks volumes of the intention to show how the band has grown musically.
‘Saw Too Much’ drops second, it’s full of that intention I mentioned previously, musically so much more has gone on since the In The Dust album, this song has teeth without being angry, like Foo Fighters without the scream. This feeling follows on with ‘On The Run’ and to liken this to Foo Fighters is no throwaway comment, the writing feels as strong as any Dave Grohl penned ditty, ‘Superficial World’ is another highlight that backs this up.

Whether familiar or not with Moving Targets and their last few albums, then all I can say (and this is with no disrespect to what has gone before) is now this is what I call a pinnacle album, it feels like they have just nailed what they were aiming for all along. ‘Fly Away’ has stadium performances all over it, ‘King Zen’ is another slice of instrumental that shows confidence in their ability to hold you with the sound, and the highlight of the album, ‘Surface’ even being just shy of 5 minutes, has you by the scruff of the neck for every note and word, a moment worth waiting for.
A close second to being the best track on the album has to be ‘Nine Lives’, it rocks the fuck out of your ears, the lead in bass line is fast and furious and the song never falls away from then on, but then its followed by what I hope is the path this band intends on following, pure rock written brilliantly and laid out to dry in the sun, ‘Regrets’ has none I hope! I sincerely suggest if you’re new to Moving Targets that this will have you signed up in an instant. Songs full of hot embers shooting off sparks into your ears.
