The new single from the uncrowned and hugely overlooked king of slightly off-kilter English guitar … what? Micko Westmoreland almost defies compartmentalisation, flying the flag for sharp and witty very English observational pop music in the vein of the truly great British songsmiths like Ray Davies and – no exaggeration, Lennon and McCartney. His last two albums have been sublime if occasionally sonically challenging collections of songs putting the human condition under the micko-scope.
‘Would You Believe It‘ is no exception. It is based, Micko says, on the idea of first and last moments, a theme connecting key moments in his life. This lyrical introspection is juxtaposed with his determinedly angular guitar work to create a kind of timeless metropolitan sonic landscape. Micko is smart in every sense, pin sharp in his observation and delivery. The single trails the new album The Trinity, due in early 2026, and finds Micko at his trenchant best. His Mellotronics for this single feature Paul Cuddeford on guitar and ebow, Budge Magraw on bass, and Jan Noble on drums (both ex-The Cesarians).

Micko & The Mellotronics are a paradox, being comfortingly New Wave and post-punk but also vitally fresh and ‘now’ – such a joy in these jaded and fretful times. Best of all, they are real. A high-contrast and very human alternative to the ‘songwriting by committee’ AI sludge currently pouring out of every streaming device. Highly recommended.
Would You Believe It is out now on Landline Records. Watch out on socials for Micko‘s live dates and for news of the forthcoming album.
