Inside The Sandbox is more than just a compilation, it’s a heartfelt tribute to the late Rick Selga, drummer of the seminal Long Beach punk band Secret Hate, who passed away a few years ago. The release fulfills Rick’s personal request to bring long-shelved recordings to light and serves as a powerful reminder of his influence on the local punk scene and the musicians who knew and loved him. Before his passing, Rick asked vocalist Mike Davis to release the unreleased Secret Hate tracks they had recorded together back in 2000. In honoring that wish, Mike teamed up with longtime friend and fellow musician Greg “Mudd” Lowther to help bring the compilation to life.
The album’s Side A opens with the long-lost Secret Hate recordings, followed by tracks from GlueFactory, the band formed by Mike and Mudd after the second run of Secret Hate came to a close when bassist Kevin relocated to Oregon. In addition to the archival material, Inside the Sandbox reflects Rick’s musical journey in his final years. He had been playing with Scam Likely, a group that regularly shared bills with Hamapple, a band Rick admired, especially for their cover of Secret Hate‘s Deception.
Rick’s presence was deeply felt across the Long Beach scene. From the early days of The Falling Idols, where he graciously lent a hand (and his drum kit) to a younger Mudd, to his time living with A.J. of Das Klown at the infamous Castle in downtown Long Beach, Rick was known not just as a talented drummer, but as a generous, encouraging, and genuine friend. Inside The Sandbox stands as a tribute to that legacy, a collection born of camaraderie, respect and the enduring impact of a drummer who left a deep mark on everyone around him. Inside The Sandbox is now available through streaming platforms via Long Beach Records & Skunk Records
