As lifelong Washingtonians, the teenage members of Petrichor are steeped in the straightedge, socially-conscious punk that came out of DC and Dischord Records in the 1980s. They also take influence from Bikini Kill, Fidlar, The Misfits, Green Day, and pop metal bands like Metallica! Petrichor were inspired to form as a band after a turn at Girls Rock! DC, a social change and empowerment program disguised as a rock camp. The foursome has grown beyond band camp status thanks to the deeply supportive DC music scene, which has stressed community, social awareness, and mutual aid for decades. Petrichor have today released their eponymous debut EP that can be streamed here.
Growing up in DC has given the members of Petrichor, ages 13 to 15, keen insights into the caged frustration of being told that your future is dire and also that you’re too young to change it. In the face of this forced impotence, co-singers Mae Zellmer and Augusta Smith have written songs that reinterpret children’s stories in late-Capitalist and post-social media terms. Other songs include an ode to the excesses of Grey’s Anatomy plotlines and an oblique horror pop cri de coeur about the incessant threat of apocalypse. Through the seriousness of their project, their irrepressible sense of playfulness shines through.
